Synopsis: |
This publication contains the text of a lecture delivered in February 2005 by Pascal Lamy (the former EU Trade Commissioner from 1999 to 2004 and the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization), the third in a series of lectures in honour of Gunnar Myrdal (the first Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe). The theme of the lecture is global governance lessons that can be drawn from a European perspective and the experience of European integration. Based upon the concept of a 'triangle of necessary conditions' to analyse governance challenges, Mr Lamy highlights five keys lessons for achieving effective regional and international co-operation in relation to trade and macroeconomic issues, security and environmental matters in a world that is becoming increasingly globalised and interdependent. |
