Description: This project on the management of arms in peace processes is based on the premise that the control and reduction of arms during peace can be a tool for ensuring stability.
Synopsis: Before and since the Cold War the main objective of the international community when taking action in cases of intra-state conflict has been the maintenance and/or recovery of stability. The main difference between then and now, however, is that before the main objective was to achieve stability in the international arena, whereas now it is to stabilize domestic situations. Since 1991, the UN has been engaged in a number of large peace processes, including Angola, Mozambique, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. It has also been increasingly pressured to act on quick-flaring and costly explosions of violence. However, it is essential that the international community focuses on long-term stability, not just short-term peace. This project on the management of arms in peace processes is based on the premise that the control and reduction of arms during peace can be a tool for ensuring stability.
