During the author's career as a widely-travelled diplomat in the British foreign service, he has been able to find time to explore numerous islands, atolls and reefs searching for shells in many countries. These have included Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Africa. Much time spent observing the behaviour of snails in marine and terrestrial habitats, as well as under laboratory conditions, has provided revealing insight into their lifestyles. He has uncovered new localities of relatively scarce species and the haunts of two entirely new ones which now carry his name: one, a related murex shell off Thailand's west coast; and the other, a cone shell browsing on a tidal reef in west Africa. This book is his latest venture and raises molluscs from the mundane level of relative obscurity as humble snails to a more illustrious role...one that links them, and us, to the need for a pollution-free marine environment and to more than 600 million years of evolution. |
