As one of the most controversial members to join the EU, the Republic of Cyprus was allowed to join the organization in 2004. Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus is a major EU concern. Its population is 780,000. Its ethnic groups include: Greek 77 per cent, Turkish 18 per cent, other 5 per cent. It exports are: citrus fruit, potatoes, pharmaceuticals, cement, and clothing. Its EU export partners are: UK, Greece, Germany, and Belgium. Its imports cover: petroleum, machinery, and transport equipment. Its EU import partners are: Italy, Greece, Germany, UK, and France. |
