Description: Migration is a much debated issue. The increase in numbers and diversity of migrants is recognised as posing significant challenges for social and public policies. These trends have significant implications for access to public services including health and social care services.
Synopsis: Migration is one of the most widely discussed and debated issues in the 21st century. Globalisation, climate change and predicted demographic developments in the West have provided an important backdrop to the current discourses and policies on migration. Various interest groups vie with each other on being tough on immigration, in Europe and elsewhere (including the USA and Australia). The last decades have also seen an increase in research and literature on different aspects of migration. The increase in numbers and diversity of migrants across is widely recognised as posing significant challenges and opportunities for social and public policies. The policy landscape on migrants' entitlements to public services and notions of social protection are in a state of flux in the context of the economic crisis and the adoption of so called 'austerity policies'. These trends have significant implications on access to services generally, including health and social care services in a context where there have been conflicting discourses. The politicised discourses around so called 'welfare migration', on the one hand, and the migrant experiences of social exclusion in different spheres of their lives, including access to public services, on the other hand, make the focus of this book highly relevant to a wide audience.
