Description: Dublin, part III, 1756 to 1847 is the twenty-sixth in the Irish Historic Towns Atlas series, which assembles topographical documentations on the development of Irish towns and publishes them as individual fascicles.
Synopsis: Number 26 in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, part III, 1756 to 1847 traces the history and development of Dublin through the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century when many of the city's modern streets were laid out. A series of loose sheet maps present a variety of views that illustrate Dublin over the period. Large-scale colour maps depict the city in 1847 at two different scales, and these can be compared with a modern town plan of 2012. Historical maps, illustrations and paintings such as those by Rocque, Scale, the Wide Street Commission and the Ordnance Survey, are produced to high quality and in large format. Thematic maps depict notable elements of the evolving urban landscape, for example, brewing and distilling, churches, city estates and growth phases. The maps are accompanied by a detailed text section and an introductory essay on the growth of Dublin from 1756 to 1847. A CD-ROM presenting all the maps and text in high resolution is included. Published by the Royal Irish Academy in association with Dublin City Council. Author: Rob Goodbody; Series editors: Anngret Simms, H.B. Clarke, Raymond Gillespie, Jacinta Prunty; Consultant editor: J.H.Andrews; Cartographic editor: Sarah Gearty; Editorial assistants: Angela Murphy, Jennifer Moore.
