Comprising papers from an international symposium held in Aarhus, Denmark in 1991, this issue presents the latest original findings on all aspects of gastrointestinal motility. The papers review and update current knowledge important to the medical and surgical gastroenterologist, as well as to the medical engineer. For the reader interested in methodological aspects of gastrointestinal motility, a novel methodology for the measurement of biomechanical wall properties and a computer-assisted data analysis programme are described in detail. The reader interested in physiological and pharmacological aspects of motility will appreciate papers about motility studies on isolated smooth muscle strips, on the isolated perfused porcine duodenum and on human tissue. Several papers also deal with the peptidergic regulation of gastrointestinal motility. Of particular interest for some readers will be studies on the nitric oxide pathway and on the dualistic concept of smooth muscle tone. |
