Synopsis: |
In 1987, a major review of road signing was carried out by the Department of Transport. The review took account of present day highways, traffic and driving conditions. Many recommendations were produced which are now being used in revisions to the Traffic Signs Manual. Chapter 8 is intended to provide a national standard of good practice for the signing and marking of obstructions, as well as for the temporary traffic control needed when roadworks are carried out. Since this chapter was first published in 1974, greater lengths of high-speed road and higher traffic volumes have meant that temporary signing has been made more difficult. This revised document has brought together and supersedes current guidance set out in "Chapter 8 (1974), Standards, Advice Notes, TRW Series drawings and TRMM notice 9/85", and has been produced after close liaison throughout with the Health and Safety Executive, the National Joint Utilities Group and the Local Authorities Associations. It incorporates the old "Chapter 8 Traffic Safety measures for Road Works", and the existing "Chapter 7 Temporary Signs", as well as a number of departmental advice notes. |
