Synopsis: |
Each year, over 25,000 people in England die from venous thromboembolism (VTE) (caused by a blood clot dislodged from its site of origin in a vein) contracted in hospital, more than twenty-five times the number who die from MRSA. Unfortunately, although many of these deaths are preventable, a safe and cost effective method of preventing VTE is not being as widely administered as it should be. The Committee's report examines the scale of the problem and its causes; the availability of prophylaxis and current guidelines; lack of professional awareness of the problem and funding issues; education and risk assessment needs; and consistency in implementation of the guidelines. Recommendations made include: that the guidelines on preventative measures which have been commissioned from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (due in May 2007) should be extended to cover the majority of hospital patients, not just surgical patients; and that all patients, on admission to hospital, should be counselled about the risk of VTE. |
