| Synopsis: |
This is the first major select committee inquiry into the pharmaceutical industry in almost 100 years. It covers: the UK pharmaceutical industry and its difficulties; the path from drug development to prescription; controls on the industry; control of access to medicines; the level of industry influence and the influence of the industry on key groups. It finds that for too long the Department of Health has assumed that the interests of the industry and health were as one. This resulted in lax oversight that has increased the industry's influence and lead to a number of practices that have worked against the public interest. The recommendations cover several areas of concern including: the licensing process and the need for greater transparency; better communications between the MHRA and the industry in the early stages of research; more research on the adverse effects of drugs; a review of the MHRA; and greater controls on the prescribing of non-specialist practitioners. |
