Description: |
This is a comprehensive account of Chinese settlement in Australia. |
Synopsis: |
Chinese have ventured to Australia from more than twenty countries. This book is the first comprehensive account of their settlement. It traces the historical background, from the experiences of the sojourners from southern China in the mid-nineteenth century through to the difficult decades of residence and travel under the White Australia policy; and from the 1950s, the distinctive challenges faced by the large numbers of settlers from South East Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese mainland in the last fifty years. Paul Jones tells of the achievements of individuals and communities and their contributions to social, political and economic life throughout Australia. It traces settlers' relationships with Asian countries throughout the decades of Australia's increasing engagement with the region. It brings to light the complex shifts in cultural identities among both migrants and the second and third generation of Australian-born Chinese. |
