Synopsis: |
Edmund Blampied (1886-1966) is best known for his lively etchings and delicate drypoints of a bygone life in rural Jersey. Before he gained a worldwide reputation as a printmaker he made his living as a commercial artist, often signing his work 'Blam'. This book charts Blampied's life through his work as an illustrator, starting in 1905 for the Daily Chronicle newspaper; his drawings of fashionable young women for The Sketch, The Sphere, The Ladies Field and other large format magazines before the First World War; his work on children's books for Thomas Nelson and Sons; his substantial contribution as a decorative artist and political cartoonist for The Bystander magazine in the 1920s; his work for monthly story magazines; his drawings of British life for The Illustrated London News in the 1930s; and the dust jackets he designed for some 130 novels. This lavishly illustrated volume opens the pages of books and magazines containing Blampied's work to show a hidden treasure of dainty drawings and charming illustrations by one of Jersey's most celebrated artists. |
