Synopsis: |
The United States' boundaries have expanded over the centuries, and at the same time, Americans' concept of their country has grown as well. The nation the world knows today was shaped by centuries of thinkers and events. When the first English colonists came to North America's northern coast, they were looking for religious freedom. Their communities were built around the belief that the Bible provided rules for government. The Massachusetts colonists' desire for religious freedom, however, did not mean they were tolerant of people who believed differently from themselves. As a result, men like Roger Williams, Thomas Hooker, and William Penn formed colonies of their own: Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Dutch settlers shaped the colony of New Netherlands, which would later become New York, and Swedish colonists built Delaware. More than three hundred years later, America is very different from the early communities shaped by these first European settlers, and yet these long-ago individuals are part of the story of how American became America. |
