In the 19th century, British Utopian Socialist Robert Owen attracted thousands of followers, many of them women, who attempted to put socialist theories into practice, and marrying them with feminist aspirations. For a quarter of a century, they struggled to create their own utopias with communal property, collective family life, free love and birth control. Eve and the New Jerusalem is a history of this movement, beginning with the socialist feminism of Mary Wollstonecraft and tracing Owenite Socialism through its rise, fall and legacy.
