In March 1916 Bournemouth & District Motor Services was registered as a company; expansion of the business a few years later meant this title no longer represented the area served, so from July 1920 the Company became Hants & Dorset Motor Services Limited. One of the best known and best loved transport operators in Southern England, Hants & Dorset's green buses were a familiar sight for over 50 years before they were repainted red during the National Bus Company era in the early 1970s. The Hants & Dorset name disappeared from the sides of buses in April 1983, but the services have continued under new names and flourish in the 21st century.
