Synopsis: |
Having in 1997 published the complete 1922 text of 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', Jeremy and Nicole Wilson aimed to create an edition of Lawrence's other major prose work, 'The Mint' that would be a worthy companion. The first decision was to use the original text Lawrence completed in 1928. This, like the 1922 text of 'Seven Pillars', was what Lawrence wrote before anyone else saw and commented on the book. He later revised two typed copies of the manuscript. These formed the basis for the edited text published in 1955. The second decision was to follow Lawrence's declared intention of extending 'The Mint' to cover the remainder of his service career, from 1926 to 1935. He hoped to base the account at least in part on letters he had written at the time, but he died, as the result of a motor-cycle accident, before he could make a start. For this edition Jeremy and Nicole Wilson have selected descriptive passages from his letters about Air Force life, adding 114 pages. The result is a far more balanced account of Lawrence's service career, and an indication of what he might have written had he lived. An introduction revised for this edition gives a brief account of the history of the work. The book is part of the scholarly fine-press edition of Lawrence's writings, originally printed for subscribers. This edition was intended as a companion to the 2003 one-volume 'Library Edition' of 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom, The Complete 1922 Text'. A larger-format edition, matching the 1997 first printing of 'Seven Pillars' and containing slightly more text, had been published in 2009. |
