Description: |
The reminiscences, Romani language, folk lore, songs, poems and family history of a Gypsy rogue as given to his lawyer. |
Synopsis: |
In the 1960s, a Gypsy rogue called Henry Sherriff met up with a respectable lawyer and from prison sent the lawyer numerous letters and accounts from his cell about his family, family history, folk lore, songs, poems, reminiscences, language and other documents. The dcocuments came to light in the 1980s and were translated, edited and collated by Robert Dawson to form this fascinating book. The Romani language alone is in a form long forgotten by most Gypsies and there are fabulous examples of the secret Irish Traveller language Shelta. |
