Description: |
A book covering three aspects of British Gypsy history - the little known years of legal Gypsy slavery, four old documents about 'Egyptians' and the relationship between reports of fairies and Gypsies. Illustrated with over 300 old photos and engravings. |
Synopsis: |
During the 17th and early 18th centuries, Gypsies could be picked up from anywhere in the UK, taken on ships as slaves and sold on the Caribbean slave markets, mainly to plantations in the the Southern American colonies. In the 18th century, various old documents reportedly explained about 'Egyptians' as they were called and their doings and language (though inaccurately). One series of documents is about Gypsies imprisoned in Northumberland. Some of the reports from history of fairies look to have been Gypsies in hiding from persecutioon and one section of the book relates to that. |
