| Synopsis: |
Erste Ideen zur vorliegenden Arbeit sind wiihrend des Forschungsaufenthaltes am IBM Research Lab in San Jose, Kalifomien entstanden. In der Forschungsgruppe von R. A. Lorie ging es darum, System R (eines der ersten relationalen Datenbanksysteme konzipiert nach den Ideen von E. F. Codd) fur technische Anwendungen zu erweitem. Die fachliche Auseinandersetzung mit den Kollegen im Research Lab und die regen Kontakte mit den nicht weniger bekannten Datenbankgruppen der Stanford University, der University of California at Berkeley und des Lawrence Berkeley Lab haben mich motiviert, die eigenen Konzeptgedanken in Realitiit umzusetzen. J. Nievergelt hat mich ermutigt, dies an der EfH Zurich zu tun. Ich danke meinen Mitarbeitem o. Heiser, H.-B. Loacker, E. Petry und A. Wiilchli ror die tatkraftige Unterstutzung und offene Kritik wiihrend der Entwurfs- und Implementierungs phase des Datenbankkems von XRS (extended relational system). Die Forschungsarbeiten wurden vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds im Projekt Nr. 2.734-0.85 uber "Darstellung und Speicherung von geometrischen Objekten in einer relationalen Datenbank" gefOrdert.
