Description: |
Part of a series examining the history of crime and justice in America, this volume looks at the movement towards the adoption of a punishment hypothesis in America. The contributors examine prison reform, privatization, democratic rule, penal theory and practice and historical precedents. |
Synopsis: |
Prison and jails sounds like an unlikely topic for historical research. However the literature on prisons addresses a surprising range of other problems. The conclusions offered by these articles are important and timely. For instance, the early juvenile reform schools were often quite effective and parents of troublesome children recognized this, asking that their children be incarcerated. The Durkeheimian stability of punishment hypothesis shows that this controversial ideas continue to generate controversy, as social scientists using sophisticated statistical approaches continue to debate whether or not the proportion of persons in prisons remains stable over long periods of time. The articles make clear that in the world of prison reform, not too much is new, from privatization to democratic rule, and that historical precedents offer a guide to problems and complexities which should anticipated in penal theory and practice. |
