Synopsis: |
Both Latin American and European developments find expression in the work of Burle Marx, the most significant South American landscape artist of the 20th Century. Like Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, both of whom he frequently worked together with, Burle Marx was strongly influenced by the architectural avant-garde of the 1920's and 30's. His repertoire embraces both curves and angular lines, geometrical and amorphous forms, and the vibrant use of colour accentuation. In the course of seven decades he created an exceptional opus including the Botanic Gardens of Sao Paulo, the gardens of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, Miami's Biscayne Boulevard, the roof gardens of the Ministry of Health and Education and the Copacobana Avenida Atlantica in Rio de Janeiro, as well as numerous parks and gardens in Venezuela and Brazil. This monograph also includes an index of the many indigenous plants discovered and named by Burle Marx. |
