Synopsis: |
There has always been an enriching and inspiring exchange between the two disciplines of art and architecture. However, conflict and tension often arise when artists take on tasks in the sphere of the built world, something frequently perceived as interference within a profession, which architects all too readily claim for themselves. "Rethinking: Space-Time-Architecture" invites readers to reconsider the possibilities of co-operation between both art forms and focuses on an initiative concerning numerous art galleries in Berlin which took place in parallel to the UIA Architecture Congress in July 2002. Light installations, material collages, video art and other media met up with rooms, construction sites, interior yards and architecture. Artists like Julian Opie, Cida de Aragao, and Les Schliesser co-operated with well-known architects, referring to phenomena like mass mobility, urbanization and privatization of the public sphere. The discussion is a lively one, precisely because of the differing approaches between art and architecture. |
