Synopsis: |
Foodborne trematode infections, acquired by consumption of raw or inadequately processed freshwater fish, shellfish and aquatic plants, affect more than 40 million people throughout the world. Recognition that these infections pose a serious and growing problem, especially in parts of south and east Asia, is now providing the impetus for the development of effective control strategies. This report endorses an integrated control strategy requiring the collaboration of health, agriculture, food safety and education sectors. It reviews the epidemiological status of foodborne trematode infections in individual countries and summarizes recent scientific advances of relevance to control. |
