Synopsis: |
Ultima is a small British Protectorate bounded by Mountains to the north and northeast and to the east and south by the inland sea. To the west it shares a frontier with Arcadia, governed by religious fanatics. Further west is an aggressive theocracy, Nexia, connected to a small independent democracy, Thule, over an isthmus. Lt Carthew arrives in Ultima to take his first post his task is to patrol the land frontier and repulse any incursion by Acadian forces. He is very successful, beating off a number of serious incursions, culminating in a two- pronged night attack. This humiliation causes the religious faction to lose influence and the people of Arcadia declare a secular government and request a British presence in the country to assist the new government in maintain order. His superiors now view him as a valuable trouble-shooter and he is sent to deal with problems in the middle east caused by terrorist activity. After a number of successful engagements with the enemy he is eventually promoted to full Colonel. He returns to the UK and accepts secondment to a secret Intelligence unit. He is given leave to return to his home village to restore the family home. There he meets Shanice Gayle and they fall deeply in love. His hopes of settling down to a quiet life in the country are soon dashed. Increased terrorist activity both at home and abroad makes life difficult and eventually he has to lead the response to a major threat in Arcadia. He was promoted to Brigadier to command this operation and although completely successful he was gravely wounded in the process. |
