Synopsis: |
An enduring representation of America since the early days of the republic, the appearance of Uncle Same has changed many times. A real man named Sam Wilson, a meatpacker from Troy, New York, who helped feed American groups during the War of 1812, was the inspiration for Uncle Sam. From joking stories and songs about 'Uncle Sam', the legend eventually became a symbol of the United States. The Uncle Sam we think of today - a bearded, older man, wearing a top hat and coat made from the Stars and Stripes - was created by illustrator Thomas Nast in the 19th century. Artist James Montgomery Flagg further modified Uncle Sam during World War I on his "I Want You" recruiting poster. Uncle Sam remains a popular figure that represents the opinions and views of the United States. |
