On July 8, 1776, the bell in the Philadelphia State House began to ring, calling the citizens of the city to hear an important announcement. From Independence Hall, a statement was read. The statement, the Declaration of Independence, would lead to the creation of the United States of America. The bell that rang in Philadelphia received its nickname, the Liberty Bell, in the 1830s, when people protesting against slavery used the bell's image as a symbol of the freedom and equality that the Founding Fathers promised to all Americans. Though the bell is cracked, millions of people visit the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia each year. The Liberty Bell, which moved into a new home across from Independence Hall in 2001, remains a worldwide symbol of freedom. |
