Synopsis: |
Michael Kenny was a sculptor and a painter, a prolific draughtsman and a print-maker. His early sculptures are dramatic, dealing with the isolation and loneliness of the individual. In later years, he worked mainly in stone in a quest for a sculpture that is simple in form and rich in meaning. With over 60 illustrations and key excerpts from the sculptor's own notebooks, this book provides the first opportunity to examine in detail the progress of Michael Kenny's career. Peter Davies traces his development from art school in Liverpool during the 1960s to the present. Kenny has said, 'I use drawing as a means to symbolic understanding. It is the unifying thread in all the work that I do, whether sculpture, drawing or painting. In both the drawing and the sculpture there is an overt and covert geometry. It is the conceptual framework which holds things together. Stone, wood, charcoal are different manifestations of the same matter - to draw with stone, to carve with charcoal and paper'. This account covers his work in all media and elucidates the fascinating relationship between the artist's drawing and sculpture.Michael Kenny was one of the leading British sculptors of his generation. His sculptures have been acquired by public collections around the world. The limited edition of 36 copies includes a lithograph, signed and numbered by the artist. |
