Synopsis: |
This Health Building Note, which replaces "Health Building Note 4" (1997 and 2008 editions), provides best practice guidance on the planning and design of in-patient facilities for adults. The accommodation described includes: bed and sanitary facilities; patients support facilities; storage and utility facilities; and, administration area and staff facilities. The recommended space standards for bed areas are applicable to in-patient rooms in any setting, including acute, day surgery and community facilities. This best practice guidance essentially applies to new-build facilities. However, the principles are equally valid and should be applied, when existing accommodation is being upgraded or new accommodation is being constructed within an existing building. The document gives guidance on general and specific design consideration in patients and support areas. It also covers general functional design requirements and engineering services. Key contents of this title include: general functional and design considerations; general engineering principles; cost information; and, example bedroom layouts. |
